History

The village of Clydesdale, Scotland, now known as Lanarkshire, gave this famous horse breed its name. There, the giant beasts worked on farms and pulled heavy loads of coal along the River Clyde. Because of their great strength, the breed spread through Scotland and into northern England, and eventually to New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the United States. With modern equipment eliminating the need for heavy draft animals, Clydesdales now make their name in shows and advertising, thanks to their iconic look.
