History

For centuries, indigenous people of Columbia used the poison of these colorful frogs to coat the tips of their blow darts, leading to the Poison Dart Frog’s common nickname. The poison is incredibly powerful, which is why predators steer clear of these colorful creatures. Scientists aren’t yet sure where the frogs obtain the poison, but species raised in captivity do not develop it, so it’s assumed the deadly poison comes from some element of the frog’s diet. As with much life in the rainforests, further study is underway to determine the significance of frogs to the ecosystem as well as potential benefits to humans. Despite a diminishing range, most species are stable.
