Description

Unlike many other species of mammal, whitetail deer fawns do not stay close by their mothers for protection. Instead, very young fawns will lay very still in tall grasses in order to evade possible predation while their mothers leave to forage for food.

  • Scientific Name: Odocoileus virginianus
  • Characteristics: This fawn is still very young, indicated by its white spots which disappear as they mature. Painted and sculpted by hand, this whitetail fawn model features the same attention to detail and true-to-life realism that you’ve come to expect from all Safari figurines.
  • Size and Color: 2.6 inches long and 2.5 inches tall, both dimensions of this adorable baby whitetail deer are roughly the size of the length of a stick of lip balm. Like mature whitetail deer, fawns have the same tawny brown fur color and white accent markings around the tail and face, however very young fawns also have the white spots visible on this figurine.
  • The Whitetail Fawn is part of the Wild Safari® North American Wildlife collection

History:

The number of fawns a whitetail doe can have varies, although most females don’t have more than 3 infants. Similar to most mammals, fawns cannot fend for themselves and rely on their mothers for food. Fawns begin to follow their mothers on foraging trips once they’re about 1-2 months old, and during this period does become extremely protective of their young. While female whitetail deer are less confrontational than males, during child rearing they become very defensive and are easily provoked. This furry little fawn has lost its mother and wants to go home with you!
