History

The story of the Golden Retriever begins in Scotland in 1865, the same year the American Civil War ended. Dudley Marjoribanks, a Scottish landowner, purchased the only yellow puppy in a litter of black wavy-coated retrievers. The Scotsman wished to breed quality retrievers for the environment of his Scottish homeland, and he joined the yellow dog to a Tweed Water Spaniel and kept the yellow pups that resulted. These yellow pups would become the progenitors of the Golden Retriever breed. By 1906, Golder Retrievers were making their first appearances in dog shows, and they were first recognized as a breed in 1911. By 1925, they’d crossed the Atlantic and were recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club. Marjoribanks had indeed bred a top-quality dog, and the breed’s popularity grew. Today, it’s the third most popular breed among American dog owners.
