Description

One of the most iconic apex predators in today’s oceans, the great white shark is an exceptionally large type of lamniform shark. On average they measure 13 feet long, although the largest ever documented great white was exactly 21 feet long!

  • Scientific Name: Carcharodon carcharias
  • Characteristics: Although great whites are amongst the most dangerous shark species in terms of attacks on humans, encounters are exceptionally rare and great whites are associated with less than 50 attacks yearly. Still, it’s best you study this beautifully hand painted model instead of the real thing!
  • Size and Color: 8.5 inches long and 3 inches tall, this model is a touch bigger than a 16 oz. water bottle on its side. All great whites have slate gray skin and white undersides, which allows them to blend into both the water’s surface and ocean floor.
  • The Great White Shark is part of the Monterey Bay Aquarium® Sea Life collection.
  • All of our products are Non-toxic and BPA free.

History:

The great white shark is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN’s red list. However, their population is not believed to be fragmented and their current population trend is unknown. They face multiple threats, including a loss and degradation of their habitat, declining prey numbers, and becoming ensnared in the nets used by commercial fisheries. Similarly, because of their large size and misnomer as a “man eater,” great whites are often hunted as a trophy animal.
