History

The Harp seal’s scientific name means “ice lover from Greenland.” Although the pups are known for their white coats, the color is short lived. Harp seals begin life on the ice with yellowish fur, but after only a few days, their coat turns stark white. After about a month of living on the ice, the white fur falls out to reveal the sleek, spotted greyish coat underneath. Greenland isn’t their only home; harp seals range the cold oceans touching North American, Europe, and Asia. Because of large, growing populations, the harp seal’s conservation status is “Least Concern.”
