Description

Contrary to popular belief, the manta ray is not its own species. Instead, manta rays are comprised of two species, the giant oceanic manta ray and the reef manta ray. They are very similar to one another, although the giant oceanic manta ray is about five feet longer than the reef manta ray.

  • Scientific Name: Genus Manta
  • Characteristics: Despite their massive size, manta rays do not have toxic barbs and are harmless to humans. Turn your living room into the deep blue sea with this hand painted and life-like figurine!
  • Size and Color: 4 inches long and 4 inches wide, both dimensions of this model are a little shorter than a soda can resting on its side. Manta rays are predominantly black, and have white accents along their fins and heads.
  • The Manta Ray is part of the Wild Safari® Sea Life collection.
  • All of our products are Non-toxic and BPA free.

History:

Unfortunately, because of overfishing both species of manta ray are classified as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Because of their low reproductive rate, manta rays are especially vulnerable to detrimental and volatile changes in their populations. Since groups of manta rays often live at great distances from one another, there is little hope that these separate groups will successfully intermingle and breed.
