History

Crabs predate dinosaurs. They’ve survived several mass extinctions and continue to flourish today. The family to which crabs belong, crustaceans, stretches back to the early Cambrian period, a time when the vast majority of phyla existing today first made their appearance. The crab family tree, then, is wide and tall, stretching back to the warm seas and including creatures as diverse as lobsters, shrimp, and spiders. Crabs and humans have gotten along since prehistory. Given that there are over 4,000 species and they range worldwide, it’s not known which culture first risked eating the clawed sea creature. The Greeks and Romans certainly ate them, and it’s likely their time on the plate extends much further back in time.
