In Germanic mythology and folklore, there are shapeshifting water spirits known by many names, including Nixie, Nix, Nykur, or Nick. In Nordic countries, similar spirits are called Näcken, Näkki, or Nøkk. They could take many forms but often would take the form of a horse.
