Named for the Father of the Erie Canal, the DeWitt Clinton was the third American locomotive on record to operate under steam in public service. On August 9, 1831, the DeWitt Clinton completed its maiden journey from Albany to Schenectady, New York, in a record 38 minutes via the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad. During this trip it reached an astounding 26 miles per hour.
